Based in Nottingham, UK, guitarist Andy Shortland has been working in the music industry as a performer, writer, session player and teacher since the early 1990s. From 1995 to 2004 he toured the world with acclaimed Queen Tribute band The Royal Family; as well occasional stints with 80s pop-rockers Dr and the Medics. In recent years Andy has been working with Tom Galley on his new Phenomena project which stars amongst others Glenn Hughes (Trapeze/Deep Purple), Tony Martin (Black Sabbath), Mel Galley (Trapeze/Whitesnake) and fellow guitarist JJ Marsh from Glenn's band. The album, Psychofantasy, is to be released in February 2006 by Escape Music. From 2004 he has also been touring with Whole Lotta Metal, a show that brought the greatest hits from the world of rock and metal to theatres around the UK to great acclaim. And, following on from this Andy has been recording a new album for 80s NWOBHM stars Cloven Hoof, their first since A Sultan's Ransom in 1989, featuring original founding member and bass player Lee Payne, plus singer Matt Moreton and drummer Lynch Radinsky from the Phenomena band. The new Cloven Hoof album, Eye Of The Sun, is to be released early in 2006.
Andy's style of playing is, by his own admission, deeply rooted in the classic players from the 70s and 80s. Influenced by 70s rock bands such as Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Queen, and 80s metal acts like Iron Maiden, Metallica, Def Leppard and Ozzy Osbourne, plus a healthy dose of the blues of Free’s Paul Kossof, Andy’s playing is an assimilation of all these influences and more.
